"If you want the best barbeque come to Sringfield and eat at Good Lands."

Billy Wishert did the world a favor when he hung up his insurance executive’s hat and donned his barbeque restaurateur’s hat. In no time at all, months really, his barbeque, slow cooked over real coals that he makes himself, has become the go-to restaurant for all food lovers.

I say “all food lovers” because Billy has made a conscious effort to find the very best local recipes from local families and put those delicious offerings on his country buffet. So food lovers get local specialties along with his 100 mile barbeque.

A well known chef from a major Charleston, SC catering house, while eating Billy’s fried chicken made from one of those local recipes, whipped our his cell phone right at the table, called his business partner and shouted, “I’ve found it!” He then called his mother to tell her that he was eating the best friend chicken he had ever had. He tried to wheedle the chicken recipe out of the cook back in the kitchen but she wouldn’t give it to him. And that’s just the chicken! Good Lands, named after the areas where it is located, is best known for its real slow cooked barbeque.

Good Lands serves killer rutabagas and greens on his large country buffet along with barbeque chicken and even fish. And he even has fried fatback and corn bread along with his great hushpuppies. That all is a sure sign you are in home-cooked heaven.

Billy serves three sauces if you want to add some spice to your ‘que and his mustard sauce (Wishert is a German name, after all, and he is in Orangeburg, a traditional German county) is what is generally know as an Orangeburg Sweet Sauce, which is a mustard sauce with a little more molasses or sugar than one finds in other parts of the state. Some people swear by it but whether you like it or not, it’s the real article.

Good Lands is located in an old, remodeled, small-town store right beside the highway that leads through Springfield. You can’t miss it because of the big sign and the full parking lot (park in the lot next door unless you get there early).
